This week was superb!

This week in Math we reviewed subtracting, multiplying, and dividing mixed numbers. In addition, we had a FRACTION TEST! It had everything we have learned about in the fraction chapter—adding fractions, subtracting fractions, multiplying fractions, dividing fractions, reducing, equivalents, and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing mixed numbers, and last but not least, turning fractions into decimals. I’ll show you an example for dividing mixed numbers—6 2/3 divided by 2 4/8. The first step is to turn the mixed numbers into improper fractions. To do that, you take 6 2/3 and multiply the denominator and the whole number which makes it 20/3. Then you do the same thing with 2 4/8, which is 20/8. Then you flip 20/8, so it is 8/20 so you can multiply. Now you multiply the numerators and then the denominators and it comes out to 160/160 which can be reduced to 1 whole.

This week in Language Arts, we continued working on our body system comic. Now everyone is making their comic in Bitstrips. We also worked on multiple meaning words. Right, now, you’re probably thinking long and hard about what that means. Well, it’s right in the name, multiple meaning words. It’s a word with multiple meanings! For example, the word “school”. The two definitions are a place you learn and a group of fish. This week we also did a www chart. WWW stands for Working With Words. WWW is when we take a word and split it apart and make a sentence with the word. Remember when I told you about multiple meaning words? Well, we went to Study Island and took a test on them.

This week in Science we worked on our last two body systems. They are the digestive system and the excretory system. Let’s start with the digestive system. Its purpose is to help digest your food! Let’s say you eat a banana. You chew the banana with your teeth. Saliva moistens it up. Then, it goes down the esophagus. The esophagus ends up in the stomach. From there the banana goes to the small intestine. From there, it’s taken to the large intestine. The purpose of the large intestine is to make the leftovers of the banana dry. From there, the …um, well, banana goes to the anus. I think you know what happens next. Now let’s talk about the excretory system. The purpose of the excretory system is to remove waste products from the body. The parts are the kidneys, ureters, bladder and the urethra.

This week we finished reading the book My Side of the Mountain. It was a great book and on Friday, which was a half day due to Spring Break, Mrs. Tomlin surprised us by showing us the movie.

That’s why this week was fabulous!

This week in Language Arts we partner edited our mysteries that we wrote. Also, we learned more about subject verb agreement. An example would be: I has two dogs. You change has to have. In addition, we worked on verb tenses like: past, present, and future. Here are some verb tense sentences. Past: Last week my dog ran away. Present: I swim in the lake with my sister. Future: I will read for half an hour tomorrow. We also started working on a comic on how two body systems work together.

In Math, we did review 1, 2, and 3 for our test next week on fractions. We are doing all sorts of stuff with fractions, like multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. Also we did changing fractions into decimals. For division, you turn mixed numbers into improper fractions and turn the second number upside down and then you multiply. For multiplying fractions, you turn mixed numbers into improper fractions and don’t turn the second one around, but just multiply. For adding and subtracting, we just add or subtract the whole number and add or subtract the numerator if the denominators are the same. If the denominators are not the same, you need to change to common denominators before you add or subtract.

This week in Science, we continued working on body systems. We covered three of them this week. They are the nervous system, the circulatory system, and the respiratory system. Let’s begin with the nervous system. It contains the brain, the spinal cord, billions of nerves, the vertebral column, the cerebrum, the cerebellum, and the medulla. The nervous system helps control your body and sends signals to your other body parts. What kinds of signals? Well, stuff like to walk, to pick stuff up, or even to write a story. It also helps your vision, balance, heartbeat, breathing, movement, your five senses, and your speech. Now, let’s talk about a body system that will pump you up. The circulatory system contains the heart, the aorta, the pulmonary artery, the veins, the right atrium, the left atrium, the right ventricle, the vena cava, and the capillaries. Did you know your heart is the size of your fist? The circulatory system pumps blood to every part of your body. There are two types of cells in your blood. They are red blood cells and white blood cells. The white blood cells kill germs, and the red ones carry oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Let’s talk about our last, but not least, body system. It keeps you breathing every minute of your life! It contains the trachea (windpipe), your two lungs, the diaphragm, the alveoli, and your throat. It’s the respiratory system! While you breathe, you probably don’t think how it works, do you? Well, this is how it works. As you breathe in, your diaphragm contracts and pulls down. Other muscles pull the lungs up ribs up and out. Air rushes into the lungs and fills up the space. As you breathe out, your diaphragm relaxes and returns to its shape. The lungs get smaller and force out the air.

That’s why this week was like getting all A’s on your report card.

This week was controlling!

In Math, we worked on fractions—still. At the beginning of the week, we worked on multiplying mixed by mixed. Here is an example: 2 5/8 x 3 1/3. You turn them into improper fractions (multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator to get the results.) So, 2 5/8 becomes 21/8 and 3 1/3 becomes 10/3. Now you multiply 21/8 x 10/3 = 210/24. You need to turn it into a mixed number. How to do that: divide 21- by 24. That equals 8 with 18 left over. The 8 becomes your whole number and the 18 becomes your new numerator, you keep the same denominator. So you have 8 18/24, which can be reduced to 8 6/8 which can be reduced again to 8 3/4. We also learned how to divide regular fractions and mixed numbers. Read carefully, this stuff is weird. Say I have 3 1/4 divided by 2 1/5, you turn them into improper fractions and have 13/4 divided by 11/5. Now here is the weird part, you flip the second fraction upside down and multiply. So, it’s like this: 13/4 x 5/11. You get 65/44, and improper fraction. You turn it into a mixed number and get 1 21/44, and that’s the answer! Weird, right? Mrs. Tomlin handed out a study sheet for us to study because we are having a test next week.

In Language Arts, we went into StudyIsland and took a test on Idioms. Idioms are figures of speech, like the cat got your tongue? and he woke up on the wrong side of the bed. We also continued our mystery stories and continued learning about verbs, like linking verbs. The last thing we did was making words. We got scrap paper, and well, made words.

This week in Science we learned a lot about our body and how it works. Do you know that your brain tells your hands, feet, legs and eyes to move? The nervous system has three parts: the brain, the spinal cord, and nerves. Your skull protects your brain. We also learned about different kinds of muscles: smooth, cardiac, and skeletal.

This week we also had Stack-o-mania! If you don’t know what that is, it is where you compete against other classes, and stack three stacks of cups. Whoever wins in the circle gets a point for their team. Our class got into the championships. We went up against Mrs. Marlatt’s team. Mrs. Marlatt’s team beat us by only 3 points.

This week was on fire!
